Cargo theft is a massive problem occurring across the European Union and the rest of the world. It is an ongoing threat, with numerous gangs and organised criminals targeting freight transported by road throughout Europe. The various types of attacks have, mostly remained the same, with curtain slashing being the cause of the majority of losses. A common strategy for curtain slashing thefts would be at first goods are identified by slashing the side of the curtain sided vehicle. Assuming the goods are desirable, they are removed from the trailer, all this may only take ten to fifteen minutes. With the Cargo Defender system installed cargo theft can be greatly reduced by triggering an alarm the moment the trailer curtain is cut.  At the moment cargo transported by road is seen by criminals to be the weak link in the chain of freight movement. Criminals are well aware of the high-tech security systems installed in most warehouses and cargo storage depots along with 24 hour security guards protecting the premises. So the appeal to criminals of targeting the valuable cargo at its weakest point seems obvious. Criminals are well aware of the mandatory rest stops truck drivers must by law take every couple of hours making truck stops and motorway rest stops a hotspot for cargo crime.
